New York Medicaid Providers Required to Complete Updated Cultural Competency Training
Every year, the New York State Department of Health requires healthcare professionals to complete cultural competency training. Providers can fulfill this requirement at no cost through the state's free accredited online courses available in the Think Cultural Health training guide.
These courses give providers an overview of cultural, health literacy, and language needs for diverse patient populations. Understanding these needs helps build trust with patients and supports better overall health outcomes.
How to Take the Required Training
Providers have two options to access and complete the Think Cultural Health training. The first is through the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal, which is the recommended route since it automatically tracks completion and simplifies the attestation process. The second option is going directly through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal
- Sign in to the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal and enter your One Healthcare ID
- If you don't have a One Healthcare ID, register now
- Go to the Tailored Training page under Profile and Settings
- On the Required Training tab, click on the course titled U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, select Think Cultural Health. This will bring you to the guide where you can log in or register and take the training that best matches your specialty.
- You may notice a disclaimer at the beginning of some courses stating that updated versions are being developed. The current courses are still valid and accepted to meet the requirement.
Through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
If you do not have Provider Portal access, go directly to the training guide, log in, and select the program that fits your scope of practice. Once done, download the roster, complete the required fields, and email it to the Cultural Competency team with the subject line: Think Cultural Health training.
