CMS Announces $50 Monthly GLP-1 Medication Access for Medicare Beneficiaries

Starting July 01, 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will make certain Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications available to eligible Medicare beneficiaries for $50 per month through a time-limited demonstration called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. The program runs through December 31, 2027, and is open to individuals enrolled in Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.

GLP-1 medications have become one of the more talked-about developments in modern medicine, showing strong results for patients managing obesity and related conditions. The problem has always been cost. These drugs carry price tags that put them out of reach for many seniors on fixed incomes, and that gap between clinical effectiveness and actual access is exactly what this program is designed to address.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz put it plainly, saying these treatments are a major medical advancement but too many seniors currently cannot access them because of high cost. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is the agency's response to that reality.

The $50 monthly cost applies to a full monthly supply, giving patients a predictable and manageable number to plan around rather than navigating shifting copays and coverage gaps. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is handling centralized claims adjudication and payments to pharmacies directly, which is designed to keep the experience consistent for patients regardless of where they fill their prescription.

Beneficiaries who are interested should speak with their doctor first to determine whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for their situation. Additional guidance for patients will be released closer to the July 1 launch date. More details about the demonstration are available at cms.gov.
